What’s Apple’s Next Legacy?


Apple has been one of the world’s leading products for a good margin of time now. The innovation and creativity that Apple has displayed over the years has lead to the success of the brand and products. The blog post I read was, “Apple Still Lives in the Shadow of Steve Jobs and That’s a Problem for its Future” on the Brian Solis Blog. Brian Solis explains that for Apple, Steve Jobs was:

  • Visionary
  • Showman
  • Public leader
  • Voice for change

These qualities are hard to replace with just one person… the downfall is that because there might not be someone like Jobs, Apple may suffer in the near future. You can chose to look at Apple in the moment which would show the success and money they are currently making. That is great for the now but what does the future of apple hold? That is the question that some people forget about because they are caught up in the now of Apple and and current success. Once the four year plan is up, apple will be searching for their next legacy. Does the next legacy come in the form of creator, an out of the box thinker? Who or what holds the legacy of Apple for the future? The next few products Apple is set to release are all from the work of Jobs. Once all of those products have been released Apple does not know what their future may hold. They need to figure out their next legacy if Apple wants to continue as the world’s leading products. If they do not step up to the plate, there are many other companies waiting to take over that title. Brian Solis has some great insight on finding the next Steve Jobs, someone who needs to go beyond what Jobs has left Apple with and create innovated products. Someone who drives other people to think differently and captivate imagination.

Evolution of the Industry

There are a lot of Public Relations and Marketing rules that have changed over time. One old way of doing things was by keeping marketing and PR completely separate. Today PR and Marketing are intertwined much more than years previous according Scott. Today overall both PR and Marketing has evolved from being narrow minded to something that is much broader than ever before! They both were narrow minded and very traditional without a target audience. Specifically for PR the only outlets were newspapers, magazines, direct mail pieces, radio, or television. Now if you compare that to the outlets PR has today, it is obvious that the rules of PR have evolved with it. It is no longer narrow minded, much more organized in a sense of having a target audience, networking, focusing on your client’s needs, and many other reasons as to why the line between PR and Marketing has blurred.

Social media has helped news to get to the publics much faster in more convenient ways. As a frequent social media user I have been able to utilize the social media tools in many different ways. That is just personal benefits, the business aspect and benefits are endless. News has been easier to get a hold of with social media because it is no longer bound to the daily newspaper. You can open these tools on your phone, computer, tablet, etc. to look for many different stories. It has made it difficult in some ways but it is all about adapting with the changes.

Journalism has a bright future for a number of reasons. The future according to Briggs is here right now. You have to be up for new things when entering this field. You have to stay curious, collaborate to learn from others. The future is here and emerging each and every day and in order to stay alive you have to reinvent what you do to stay alive. Briggs explains that when he was in college some of the careers available today were not even invented yet. He urges everyone to keep that in mind and to stay open with a field that has endless possibilities as long as you can stay curious and stay open to changes.

The internet and social media create the ability for everyone to be their own printing press. We are our own gatekeeper in the sense that we are able to choose what news is important to us. For example we can like whatever page on Facebook or follow certain twitter accounts to regulate what we see on social media. One issue brought up is that there are companies that have increased domination and somewhat pose as a gatekeeper such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple. This can surface issues with having top dog companies acting as gatekeepers because they would have a plethora of power in deciding what is important to everyone. Social media has also eroded interest in many other topics that are also important. It has created a lack of interest in other topics and focuses on many other topics that may not hold a higher importance all the time.
